Doctor's interview

Dr. Ekkawit Thaworn

A highly skilled physician specializing in the treatment and surgical management of bone and joint conditions. He is particularly passionate about surgery, as he believes it offers patients the fastest and most effective path back to a normal, active life. Today, he takes great pride in caring for his patients and dedicates himself fully to the work he loves.

Expertise in Spine and Orthopedic Surgery

After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University in 1999 (B.E. 2542), Dr. Ekkawit Thaworn received full scholarship support to pursue advanced training in Orthopedic Surgery at Ramathibodi Hospital for four years.

He later worked as a physician at Siriraj Hospital Sriracha, where he gained extensive clinical experience. Dr. Ekkawit then continued his subspecialty training in Spinal Orthopedics at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. Reflecting on his career path, he shared:

“I chose to study medicine because I have always been deeply interested in human anatomy, particularly the musculoskeletal system. Over time, I became skilled in treating and performing surgery on bones and joints. I enjoy surgery because it often provides a clear and effective solution—allowing patients to return to normal life more quickly. Every day, I take pride in caring for my patients and dedicating myself fully to the work I love.”

Managing Spine Injuries and Emergency Cases

A large proportion of emergency surgeries performed by Dr. Ekkawit involve spinal injuries resulting from accidents. This is partly due to the hospital’s proximity to industrial zones, where heavy machinery and physically demanding labor are common.

“Many patients arrive with severe spinal conditions caused by accidents at work. One case involved a patient who was unable to move his legs due to severe nerve compression from prolonged heavy labor affecting the spine. After surgical treatment, the patient was able to stand, walk, and return to a normal life.”

Another memorable case occurred during the Songkran Festival, when a patient sustained multiple knee fractures following an accident.

“The patient underwent surgery on April 22, after living with fractured bones for nearly ten days. This made the procedure particularly challenging. However, with careful planning and teamwork, we were able to perform the surgery successfully, and the patient ultimately made a full recovery.”

Advanced Treatment Options for Spinal Disorders

Treatment for spinal conditions varies depending on the severity and specific diagnosis. Dr. Ekkawit provides a wide range of treatment options, from conservative management to advanced surgical interventions.

These include:

  • Medication and physical therapy

  • Spinal injections for pain and inflammation

  • Vertebral augmentation procedures, such as Vertebroplasty, which involves injecting medical cement into fractured vertebrae to stabilize the spine, relieve pain, and prevent further collapse

“Vertebroplasty is commonly used in elderly patients with spinal fractures. It can provide rapid pain relief and significantly improve mobility and quality of life.”

Precision Diagnosis and Patient-Centered Care

Dr. Ekkawit emphasizes that successful treatment begins with accurate diagnosis. This involves careful physical examination, detailed medical history-taking, and appropriate imaging studies such as X-rays and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

“A skilled physician must be meticulous in evaluating each patient. Accurate diagnosis allows us to design the most effective treatment plan and achieve the best possible outcome.”

Preventive Spine Care and Early Screening

For individuals who may not yet have symptoms but are concerned about spinal health, Dr. Ekkawit strongly recommends preventive screening and regular check-ups, particularly for:

  • People with physically demanding occupations

  • Individuals with a long history of heavy lifting or repetitive strain

  • Elderly patients

  • Women approaching menopause, who may be at increased risk of spinal and bone-related conditions

Early evaluation can help identify potential problems before they progress into more serious or disabling conditions.
