If left untreated, it can even result in tooth decay, which can spread and affect the nerves. In such cases, the only option may be to extract the affected tooth and rely on "dental implants."

Why opt for dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are securely fixed in place. The procedure involves surgically inserting a metal alloy or frame into the jawbone beneath the gums to serve as a substitute for the natural tooth root. This method of tooth replacement is efficient, long-lasting, and provides the closest sensation to natural teeth.

Safety with medically approved materials

The materials used for dental implants are typically grade 4 titanium alloy (medical grade), which has been extensively researched and proven to be safe and biocompatible with human tissue. It is strong, durable, and capable of withstanding chewing forces while maintaining its shape. Titanium is widely trusted in the medical field for its high safety standards.

The three essential components of dental implants

1. Implant Fixture

Made of titanium, it resembles a tooth root and is implanted into the jawbone. It integrates with the body and securely bonds with the jawbone without causing inflammation or adverse reactions.

2. Abutment

This component connects the implant fixture to the dental crown and serves as the support structure.

3. Dental Crown

This is the visible part of the tooth replacement. It is typically made from metal, ceramic, or a combination of both, and is designed to closely resemble a natural tooth in appearance and function.

The process of dental implantation

Step 1:

Oral health examination to determine the most suitable treatment. X-rays are taken to assess jawbone thickness.

Step 2:

Surgical placement of the titanium implant fixture into the bone, followed by suturing the incision. Stitches are removed after approximately 14 days.

Step 3:

Recovery period. During this stage, patients are advised to consume soft foods to encourage faster integration of the implant with the jawbone.

  • Upper jaw: 3–6 months

  • Lower jaw: 2–3 months

(This is the time required for full osseointegration.)

Step 4:

Dental impressions are taken and sent to the dental laboratory to create the customized dental crown.

Step 5:

The customized crown—made from metal fused with porcelain or sometimes entirely ceramic—is placed onto the abutment using medical-grade cement or adhesive.

Advantages of dental implants

  • Enhances both the appearance and functionality of teeth, closely resembling natural teeth.

  • No need to alter adjacent teeth, unlike dental bridges that require reducing the size of neighboring teeth.

  • The implant acts like a natural root, maintaining jawbone stability and preventing bone loss in the area of the missing tooth.

  • Helps prevent bone resorption in the missing-tooth area.
